The School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) announces a position opening for a team-oriented scientist seeking leadership growth opportunity to coordinate a multidisciplinary NIH-funded International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) project focused on drug discovery, chemical ecology, coral reef conservation, and microbial ecology exploring reefs in Fiji and the Solomon Islands.
Responsibilities: This successful candidate will manage the Central Operations Core (COC) of an NIH-funded International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. The project is focused on drug discovery, chemical ecology, coral reef conservation, and microbial ecology exploring reefs in Fiji and the Solomon Islands. The COC acts as the central repository for materials and data associated with the biological samples and pharmacological testing for this program. The COC manages the existing library of 10,000+ extracts and continues to acquire new extracts via field collections, while distributing these to collaborators for screening in assays relevant to the U.S., low and middle-income countries, and the island nations of the South Pacific. Drug discovery efforts target: i) infectious disease, ii) drug-resistant microbes, iii) neglected tropical diseases, iv) cancer, v) neurodegenerative, and vi) psychoactive disorders. Hit prioritization is performed based on potency, bioactivity spectrum, and chemical novelty based on mass spectrometric data, as well as genomic and taxonomic novelty emphasizing understudied species and ecotypes, and chemical ecology data. The COC performs anti-microbial screening of the ICBG extract library to identify potential leads against various drug resistant microbes and to aid bioassay-guided compound purification from the prioritized hits. The COC also coordinates legal agreements, contracts, and permits required for domestic and international research activities and oversees the safe transfer of extracts, fractions or bulk samples from the South Pacific to the COC in Atlanta, as well as organizing collecting trips to Fiji and the Solomon Islands in collaboration with partners at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. The successful applicant will be responsible for communicating milestones and outcomes from the program to the funding agency and for coordinating results among the program’s partners.
Desirable traits and experiences include:
- A Ph.D. is desirable, but non-Ph.D. applicants with relevant experience will be considered.
- Applicants with advanced training and considerable hands-on experience in fields such as pharmacology, microbiology, molecular biology, natural products chemistry, chemical ecology, or a related field are desirable.
- Experience with managing large data sets, the organization of field expeditions, or negotiations of agreements among industrial, academic, and government entities (especially in developing countries)
- Ability to communicate and coordinate among multiple research groups and to participate within a team environment towards research goals.
